is a hybrid community development and social enterprise institution focused primarily on empowering young people through entrepreneurship, skills development, and access to small-scale financing. The organisation was established in response to the growing unemployment and limited economic opportunities facing young people in Uganda, particularly those with limited formal education or who have left school before completing their studies. Although both young men and women face unemployment, many still have the determination and potential to build decent and sustainable livelihoods when provided with the right support, resources, and opportunities. GLEDECS is located in Kyotera District in Uganda’s Southern Region, near the Uganda–Tanzania border. The area is underserved and faces significant social and economic challenges, including poor infrastructure, limited internet connectivity, unreliable markets, inadequate storage facilities, limited access to electricity and clean water, and difficult transport conditions that affect farmers and their produce.
Many households in Kyotera District depend on small-scale subsistence farming. Farmers often experience difficulties transporting and storing their produce, resulting in post-harvest losses and limited access to profitable markets. The area also experiences water shortages during periods of drought, while heavy rains can cause flooding, accidents, poor sanitation, and illness among both people and livestock. Access to education and employment remains a major concern. Several schools in the area previously received support from organisations such as World Vision, Compassion International, and DANIDA. Following the end of their programmes approximately seven to ten years ago, many communities experienced reduced educational support and an increase in school dropouts. Kyotera is also a community with a long history of HIV and AIDS. Many people affected by HIV continue to experience stigma and social exclusion. GLEDECS therefore seeks to promote inclusive development that addresses both economic hardship and the social challenges affecting vulnerable households.
